We are huge fans of mid-century design and simply can’t get enough of Alvin Lustig, the ultimate design magician and our absolute hero, so we keep collecting more of his iconic work.
+
Alvin Lustig impacted modern design in many ways, pioneering a fresh perspective with simplified shapes, flat colors, and intensely intriguing compositions. His imaginative vision enabled him to keep surprising with new and unexpected designs in many mediums, from textiles to posters to industrial design and interior design. But he is most celebrated for his contribution to book design.
+
Working closely with New Directions Publishing, Lustig treated book cover design as an art form, creating iconic dust jackets that revolutionized this aspect of book publishing. What he was after, was exposing the author’s creative impetus, not just the storyline. This quest for a deeper understanding of the origin of a book led him to expose the captivating layer of an author’s mindset, placing it front and center on the book cover.
+
Lustig’s enduring legacy stems from his belief that good design should be extended into every aspect of life. He appreciated the power of design as a platform for voicing social messages, a belief that we also share, here, at Château Cramirat.

The Château Cramirat Collection is a treasure trove of art and design by philosopher Anna Ravitzki and designer Dan Alexander, housed in a 12th-century Templar landmark in the Valley of Mankind, Périgord, France.
