Our rooftop is back, and more majestic than ever.
Shaped like the hull of an upside-down ship, Château Cramirat’s 800-year-old timber roof is being brought back to life. This summer, the first half of its beam structure was beautifully restored, and the second half will be completed this coming fall.
Originally crafted by medieval shipbuilders who brought their nautical expertise inland, this vaulted design is a rare feat of engineering, typically found only in ancient churches and castles.
The roof’s inverted hull form isn’t just aesthetically striking, it’s a brilliant architectural solution with deep historical roots. During the Middle Ages, shipwrights were often commissioned to construct large-scale roofs for castles and cathedrals, applying their advanced knowledge of load distribution and curvature. The result was a self-supporting, wind-resistant structure that allowed for wide, open interiors without the need for central columns. Beyond its structural integrity, such a roof also symbolized power, resilience, and visionary design, qualities that resonated with both religious and military institutions of the time.
Over the past year, our expert team of master carpenters from Ateliers Férignac has worked tirelessly on the rooftop’s restoration, using authentic medieval techniques. Their craftsmanship preserves more than just wood, it preserves living history. It’s a symbol of our journey at Château Cramirat, sailing through the past into a bold and creative future.
Originally built as the chief Templar commandery in Périgord and home to the order’s Grandmaster 800 years ago, Château Cramirat has been undergoing a powerful renaissance. Under the leadership of philosopher of science Anna Ravitzki and designer Dan Alexander, the château is being transformed into a vibrant center for art, design, science, and technology in the heart of southwest France.
From our newly restored rooftop to our all-new attic dancefloor, we’re opening the doors to a new era — and we’d love for you to be part of it.
Come sail through time with us.
Château Cramirat – 800 years strong, and just getting started.
